If Jane Sanders and Hillary Clinton were ever to come in direct contact there is a good chance they would react in the same way matter and anti-matter are predicted to react, with a massive explosion that annihilates both. (Actually, there are photos proving this theory to be untrue, but being playful with the laws of physics….) Jane Driscoll O’Meara Sanders is a former community organizer, college president, and a top adviser to her husband, Bernie Sanders. And quite different from Hillary Clinton. For starters, Jane is relaxed and easy going.
Jane Sanders is nine years younger than her husband. He was raised Jewish, she was raised Catholic. They did not know each other in Brooklyn, where they both grew up, but met in Burlington, Vermont, during his first campaign for mayor. During an interview with Vermont Business Magazine, Jane said,
“I went with the Neighborhood Organization folks to a meeting with the then Mayor and they asked questions. I didn’t feel we were getting direct answers, so I started asking questions. They said, ‘You sound like Bernie Sanders, now!’ I sat down and said, ‘Who’s Bernie Sanders?’ They said, ‘He’s running for mayor.’ I said, ‘Let’s organize a debate.’ So we did. When I heard him speak, well, that was it. We met at the victory party, and that was the beginning of forever.” (Bernie won “that” election by 10 votes.)
Bernie and Jane were together for seven years before they married in 1988. Avoiding any religious conflicts, they chose to marry in a civil ceremony. On their honeymoon, Jane and Bernie traveled with 10 others to create sister city ties with Yaroslavl, Russia, Bethlehem in the West Bank, and Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua. (In a memoir, Bernie described the trip as “a very strange honeymoon.”) Bernie came with a son from an earlier relationship, and Jane brought three children from her first marriage. (They sound like real people.)
Hillary Rodham married Bill Clinton on October 11, 1975, at the home they own in Fayetteville. Before proposing, Bill Clinton secretly purchased a house she had said she liked. When he proposed marriage to her and she accepted, he revealed that they now owned the house. Bill and Hillary have never divorced, though this may be for political reasons. Former President Clinton has had several well-documented affairs and there is no suggestion they still love one another. They seem to believe maintaining the illusion of marriage, in support of Mrs. Clinton’s political aspirations, is more important than leaving a broken marriage.
Just as Bernie seems to be genuine, Jane Sanders seems to be a genuinely happy woman. They certainly seem to have a healthy, loving relationship.
Can the same be said of Bill and Hillary Clinton? Look for yourself! They are in the eye of the media all the time.
