Sanders: Boost Social Security Benefits

Reposted from – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday said it is unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of Iowa retirees, orphans and people with disabilities won’t get a Social Security cost-of-living adjustment next year.

Unless Congress acts, he added, last Thursday’s announcement by the Social Security Administration that it would freeze retirement benefits also means no increase during 2016 for disabled veterans.

“That is unacceptable,” Sanders said. The way cost-of-living adjustments are calculated “is clearly broken and must be fixed,” he added.

Sanders’ Social Security Expansion Act would make sure annual inflation adjustments are based on a formula that accurately measures the spending patterns of seniors. Sanders’ legislation would also increase Social Security benefits and scrap a cap on income subject to the payroll tax. Now, someone making millions of dollars a year pays no more than someone making $118,500 a year. Levying the same tax rate on annual income greater than $250,000 would only impact the top 1.5 percent of wage earners while boosting benefits for millions of retirees.

Sanders highlighted how Social Security helps Iowans.

“While Social Security is taken for granted today, let us remember that before it was signed into law nearly half of senior citizens in Iowa were living in poverty. Today, while much too high, the senior poverty rate in Iowa is 6.4 percent,” Sanders said.

More than 616,000 people in Iowa – nearly 20 percent of the population – received $9 billion in Social Security benefits last year. The benefits went to more than 430,000 seniors, 78,000 people with disabilities and more than 38,000 Iowa children. Social Security last year lifted more than 228,000 Iowans out of poverty.

“At a time when the average Social Security benefit is just $1,328 a month and more than two-thirds of the elderly population rely on Social Security for more than half of their income, our job must be to expand, not cut, Social Security,” Sanders said.

He said Republican White House hopefuls like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have proposed raising the retirement age to 69 or 70 and slashing Social Security benefits.

“I have a hard time understanding what world these Republicans and their billionaire campaign contributors live in,” Sanders said. He cited reports that more than half of workers between the ages of 55 and 64 have no retirement savings at all. And only 1 in 5 Americans has a traditional pension.

Dear Senator Sanders, please don’t forget or abandon us, America’s retired public servants because we are taking a beating. We need help in spreading the word as a moral imperative. WHY ARE WE RETIRED PUBLIC SERVANTS COMPLETELY IGNORED? THIS LAW THAT HAS MADE AMERICAS PUBLIC SERVANTS AND RETIREES THIRD CLASS CITIZENS! Before Social Security is expanded, there are some grossly unfair existing and mysterious obscure laws that must be corrected and resolved: IT’S SOCIAL INSECURITY for millions of public servants who never had the opportunity to invest in our own private annuities because we thought of Social Security was our safety net until we discovered GPO/WEP confiscated our earned and paid for SS pensions. The little I did save was lost during the crash. If you talked to those people affected by GPO/WEP, you’d be shocked and outraged because of individual extenuating circumstances. What makes me so sad is it’s not just about money. It’s about our long, hard working lifetimes stolen from us. We will never regain or relive those years. The GPO/WEP has created yet another group of poverty stricken American taxpayers, another minority group so to speak without any personal control, awareness. consent, or knowledge. And another thing that should not be overlooked nor forgotten is the brutal effect especially the GPO had on our surviving children at college time, resulting in mounds of student loans and credit card debt. This is why I have always maintained that our government should give LOW INTEREST OR NO INTEREST CONSOLIDATION LOANS to those of us affected by this ridiculously unfair law….in lieu of our so called “borrowed” .. That would certainly help us get back on our feet in our golden years and regain some portion of our lives that were lost as we believed in SS. . Visit us at to educate, protect, and prepare yourselves because this obscure, 32 year old law could be affecting you without your knowledge as it did me. Why doesn’t the government offer consolidation loans to retired public servants who are impacted by GPO and WEP in lieu of our confiscated SS pensions and to help us avoid personal bankruptcies? Are we not as important as the big banks that were bailed out? Silly me, I know the answer to that! And what about the GPO that severely punishes millions of women and survivors? What a slap in the face by a government who crushes their own REAL public servants. This is shameful if not criminal. Get with it congress, live up to your constitutional obligation to pay your bills. DO YOUR JOB!

Please go to right now. They currently have a survey to be completed if you are affected by WEP/GPO. Everyone needs to let their voices be heard on this if a repeal is going to happen. This can only work in numbers.

H.R. 973 and Senate Bill S 165 Repeal WEP/GPO (Windfall Elimination Provision/Government Pension Offset). This is so unfair. I will tell you what Social Security told me when I went to apply for widow’s benefits “Most people are not aware of this law until they retire or their spouse passes away”. So in other words you get $0 or next to nothing. If you get next to nothing meaning you will be taxed on that money and get nothing.

EVERYONE needs to contact their senators and congressman and then Mr. Obama and remind him of his promise to push for this repeal during his campaign. You can do this online, write him or walk into their office.

This is not an entitlement it is money you or your spouse worked hard for and sacrificed time with their families so that we could be afforded a comfortable retirement yet we are not benefiting from our money. They are using our money to provide free food, shelter, health care, money, oh an lets not forget phones to people who could but would not work like we did. There are many people suffering by this law right now and many more to come. These people are having to make a choice between shelter, heat, air conditioning, medicines, food and many more of life’s necessities. They worked hard all their life and they are rewarded by WEP/GPO . We are the people who have kept this country going and by doing that we have taught our children to do the same. We must come together as a team to get this repealed. It needs to be repealed now or it will hurt many more hard working Americans. Please share this with friends and family and encourage them to contact the appropriate persons and let them know how unfair it is. Let’s not put our children in the place they have to worry about us financially when they are trying to take care of their families. My husband passed 03/22/14 and I know he never dreamed that my household income would be cut by more than 1/2 monthly because of this. Before you vote your senators and congressmen and of course the president of the United States make sure you know where they stand on this issue. I don’t know about you but I need my money just because my husband passed none of my bills stopped. As a matter of fact they increased with inflation, we have our own bills plus maintenance on our homes that have to be paid for. Don’t let this government steal our money and put us in poverty. This is outrageous. Thank each and everyone of you for reading. Now lets get some leaders in office and get the work done. God bless you.

Oh now we cannot count on
H.R. 973 and Senate Bill S 165 as it appears this is only addressing WEP. There are more people involved in Repeal of WEP/GPO. We all need our money not just a portion of us. We all started our careers under different laws which were discretely changed and we were not notified.
