Bernie Sanders has not given any paid speeches to Wall Street firms. Neither has Donald Trump, who is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Why is this a big deal? Now that only Sanders and Trump are left in the 2016 presidential election to compete against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the time is ripe for the public to demand that she live up to her word and release her Goldman Sachs speech transcripts. For months, Clinton has refused to divulge what she said to Goldman Sachs employees in three paid speeches that netted her almost $700,000.
Apparently realizing that Trump and Sanders have no Wall Street speeches to divulge, Clinton has tried to dodge the issue by talking about tax returns. According to the former First Lady, her 33 years of released tax returns should be sufficient to gain the public’s trust. However, when asked whether she would release the Goldman Sachs transcripts if Donald Trump released his own 33 years of tax returns, Clinton again ducked the issue by suddenly insisting that the whole thing was sexist and involved “new standards imposed on me and nobody else.”
Even to devout Clinton supporters, it is impossible to argue that she comes off looking anything but sleazy and petulant. Worse yet, she is continuing to play a game that Donald Trump can win: What happens when Trump decides to dump all of his data? Frankly, the bombastic billionaire buffoon doesn’t seem to have much to fear. Everyone knows he’s an arrogant blowhard and opportunistic business mogul, so what could his tax returns or non-Wall Street paid speeches do to damage him?
Hillary Clinton is playing a dangerous game, and the Democratic Party does not want to nominate someone who could be made to look foolish and dishonest just before election day. Donald Trump could play his ace by releasing all of his tax returns and paid speeches in October…forcing the media to demand that Clinton do the same. If she refuses, which is likely, even the liberal mainstream media will not be able to protect her. Trump will have played an epic trump card that will resonate all the way until ballots are cast.
Bernie Sanders and his supporters must press the Democratic National Committee to insist that Hillary Clinton either release her Wall Street transcripts now or exit the race. Failing to release the transcripts now will only make it easier for Donald Trump to wreak havoc later…perhaps giving him the key to the Oval Office. Now that nobody is left in the race who has given paid speeches to Wall Street firms, Hillary Clinton must prove that she has the honesty and integrity she so desperately tries to portray.
