Who can forget last year’s viral sensation called the Ice Bucket challenge that raised over 100 million dollars for ALS? While Bernie and the #feelthebern phenomenon certainly isn’t on that level, we are seeing some of the same things happening here. When people begin to become emotionally attached to a cause as they have with the #FeelTheBern campaign their energy becomes contagious and many people, even people that don’t really care about whatever the cause is get involved because it’s the cool or hip thing to do. Even those that aren’t all that interested in a particular cause become a huge asset of the viral success because a big part of going viral is staying visual.
Below are some of the reasons that this campaign has went viral and almost taken on a life of its own.
Reddit – Bernie’s subreddit (a name for a dedicated page on Reddit) just rolled past 100,000 readers and there is no disputing who rules there. That is an incredibly active community comprised of some very talented individuals working behind the scenes to help organize the grassroots efforts that many of you have seen by now. Hillary’s followers on Reddit are relegating to trolling Bernie’s page since her reach on there is minimal at best.
Facebook – Bernie has made an astounding rise on Facebook. We started tracking where the two candidates stood back on July 2. On that date Clinton was over 250,000 fans ahead of Bernie. Here we are two months later and Sanders not only caught her but now holds a commanding lead of around 70,000 fans. We won’t bring up the rumors that a great deal of her fans were purchased to boost her numbers because it doesn’t matter, the fan count while important does not tell the whole story, engagement is where the rubber hits the road and Sanders’ page on Facebook generally gets at least 5 times the engagement (shares, likes, comments).
Tumblr – Bernie gets an incredible amount of action on Tumblr thanks in part to the work of Tyler Oakley, a Bernie supporter and internet celebrity with millions of younger followers. BTW, none of those followers are being counted in any of the big polls you are seeing. Because, landline phones. I’m sure Tumblr is a bit of a mystery to some Bernie’s opponents and their supporters but with 246 million blogs there it’s huge in spreading the message. .
Internet Traffic – Sanders wins in the internet traffic department holding a solid lead over Clinton according to data provided by Alexa.com. berniesanders.com is the 7.515th ranked website globally while hillaryclinton.com is ranked 19,286th globally.
People switching sides – I have yet to hear of anyone that has switched from Bernie’s side to Hillary’s side, in fact daily we hear of many that are leaving her camp and coming over to #FeelTheBern. Just last week international recording artists Belinda Carlisle publicly broke ranks with her family(her son is a huge Hillary supporter) and came over to show support for Bernie. The fact that so many have crossed over cannot be a good sign the Clinton campaign and surely has them very nervous.
yes, i switched teams…my candidate! https://t.co/ljzT0FXrSN

I Side With – Through September 6th, nearly a million people, 976,715 to be exact, have made their voices heard through a polling system on isidewith.com. The poll on that website show Bernie Sanders winning in 33 states and virtually tied with Clinton in 5 others. Interesting to note as well is that even in most of the states she is winning it is pretty close, where as Bernie has several states that he has completely ran away with the the race. Of course we know this is a popular vote and the election is anything but a popularity contest but if enough people are making their voices heard, there will be no other option but to elect who they want, finally.
There really doesn’t seem to be anything that can stop Bernie. He’s a stable, honest individual that has had a consistent message that was in place before many of his supporters were born. That in tandem with a grassroots organization second to none that is literally making history by bringing together scores of people together in an organized fashion to fight for each other.
