New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Hillary Clinton are facing criticism for joking about “CP time” while performing in a comedic sketch over the weekend. During Inner Circle’s annual event in New York City, Clinton and de Blasio surprised people with a racial joke. The New York City mayor/Clinton’s former Senate campaign manager jokingly answered why it took him so long to endorse her.

Mayor Bill de Blasio: “Sorry, Hillary. I was running on CP time.”

Mrs. Hillary Clinton: “Cautious politician time. I’ve been there.”

The insulting remark has a double meaning, and is a reference to “colored people” time, an archaic phrase used to stereotype black people, who were supposedly late for everything. Apparently, some people thought using a racial slur to support a joke with a double meaning was funny. Unfortunately, a joke gone wrong is not Hillary Clinton’s only expression of racial prejudice. There’s more evidence of her contempt for blacks.

Mrs. Hillary Clinton has openly supported the mass incarceration of blacks. She and her husband supported the federal “three strikes” law in his 1994 State of the Union address. Months later, her husband signed a $30 billion bill initiating dozens of new federal capital crimes, as well as mandated life sentences for three-time offenders. The vast majority of the offenders were black. While supporting the crime bill, she used racially coded language to cast black children as animals. She said,

“They are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘super-predators.’ No conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.”

These get tough on crime laws have had devastating effects. HIV and AIDS, poverty, limited access to a quality education, and the destruction of families are the end result of these laws.

Additionally, in 2008, when Mrs. Clinton was battling against Obama in the Democratic primaries, she often used racism in the hopes of developing a strong white voting base. Mrs. Clinton, in an interview with the New York Times stated,

“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on. [An article by The Associated Press] found how Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me. […] These are the people you have to win if you’re a Democrat in sufficient numbers to actually win the election. Everybody knows that.”

As with many issues, she claims to have changed her mind. What a shame she seems unable to change her behavior.
